Tiger Swallowtail Mural | Demopolis, Alabama

Alabama mural artist Banks Compton created this tiger swallowtail mural on the side of his parents' home in Demopolis, Alabama.

The design is personal to Banks and his relationship with the property. A monumental tiger swallowtail butterfly fills the center of the wall, surrounded by four blue stars arranged like the points of a compass.

The compass-like design represents a simple idea: no matter how many places Banks travels through his career and life, Demopolis will always be home.

A Personal Mural in Demopolis

While many of Banks' murals tell the stories of businesses, schools, cities, and organizations, residential projects offer an opportunity to tell much more personal stories.

This mural combines family, childhood, travel, and Banks' longstanding fascination with nature into a single image specific to the property where it was painted.

Inspired by a Childhood Fascination With Nature

The tiger swallowtail also connects the mural to the beginning of Banks' interest in art.

Growing up around the family's property near Demopolis, Banks developed an early fascination with insects and butterflies. Collecting and studying them encouraged him to pay attention to the intricate patterns, shapes, and colors found in nature.

That childhood interest eventually became part of a much larger artistic vocabulary. Wildlife, insects, plants, and natural environments continue to appear throughout his murals and paintings today.

For this mural, the swallowtail serves as both a recognizable piece of Alabama wildlife and a reference to where that artistic curiosity began.

Four Stars Pointing Home

Behind the butterfly, four blue stars are positioned around the composition like points on a compass.

Banks' mural career has taken him to communities throughout Alabama and across the United States, but the four stars represent the idea of always being able to find the way home.

Placing that imagery on his parents' house makes the symbolism particularly personal: the mural isn't simply about Demopolis as a location, but about home as a constant point of return.
