A Permanent Collection of Fine Art & Public Art in Demopolis, Alabama
The Chanticleer Center in downtown Demopolis is home to a permanent collection of artwork by Alabama artist Banks Compton.
Original paintings are displayed throughout the main lobby, hallways, and office spaces, alongside photography documenting Banks' murals and public-art projects in communities across Alabama and beyond. Outside, Banks' large-scale Rooster Day mural extends the collection onto the building itself.
Together, the artwork makes the Chanticleer Center one of the best places to experience the range of Banks' work—from studio painting to large-scale public art. The Center itself describes its lobby and office areas as showcasing Banks' fine art.

Works appear in the main lobby, corridors, and individual office spaces, allowing the artwork to become part of the everyday environment of the Chanticleer Center.
The collection provides a permanent home for paintings exploring many of the subjects that recur throughout Banks' practice: nature, Alabama landscapes, people, memory, Southern culture, and storytelling.

From Canvas to Public Art
The collection also includes photography documenting Banks' murals in other communities, connecting his studio practice with the large-scale public artwork for which he is best known.That connection continues outside the building, where Banks' Rooster Day mural covers the east wall of the Chanticleer Center. The mural features monumental roosters, flowers, insects, the Tombigbee River, and the white cliffs of Demopolis, drawing from the city's history and annual Rooster Day tradition.

About Banks Compton
Banks Compton is an Alabama muralist and fine artist whose work explores storytelling, nature, people, culture, and a sense of place.A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Banks works across painting, murals, sculpture, and public art. His fine-art practice includes large-scale oil and oil-pastel paintings exploring landscapes and figures from his personal life.
