Southern Spirits: Capturing the Essence of Home was a solo exhibition by Alabama artist Banks Compton at the Eastern Shore Art Center in Fairhope, Alabama.
Through a collection of paintings and drawings, the exhibition explored home, memory, identity, and Banks' relationship with the South. The works followed an autobiographical journey through a disrupted transition into adulthood during the COVID-19 pandemic and ultimately a return to his roots in Alabama.

Finding Home Through Painting
The works in Southern Spirits reflect Banks' experiences moving between places and eventually returning home to Alabama.
Figures, landscapes, animals, memories, and familiar Southern imagery come together throughout the exhibition, with individual paintings functioning almost like visual poems or fragments of memory.
Rather than presenting a literal narrative, the exhibition explored the emotional idea of home—how particular people, places, experiences, and landscapes can continue to shape identity even after leaving them behind.
The Eastern Shore Art Center similarly described the exhibition as an autobiographical journey culminating in Banks' return to his Alabama roots.
An Evolving Fine Art Practice
Southern Spirits brought together work from different periods of Banks' development as a painter, connecting earlier figurative and narrative work with newer paintings inspired by life along the Gulf Coast and in Alabama.
Works displayed in the exhibition included large-scale paintings such as Summer Evenings, Shrimp Boil, Morrison Spring, Mother Laughing, and Local Break, alongside earlier paintings and drawings. Banks' current Fine Art portfolio identifies these works as spanning oil painting, oil pastel, mixed media, and other traditional media.
The exhibition helped establish a thread that continues throughout Banks' work today: preserving the people, landscapes, stories, and everyday experiences that create a sense of place.
Artist Talk
As part of the exhibition, Banks presented a public gallery talk at the Eastern Shore Art Center on January 27, 2024, discussing his background as a painter and guiding visitors through the works included in Southern Spirits.

Banks Compton is an Alabama muralist and fine artist whose work explores storytelling, nature, memory, local culture, and a sense of place.
A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Banks works across painting, murals, sculpture, and public art. His studio practice frequently draws inspiration from the people, landscapes, and experiences of the American South.
