Foley Community Library
One of Banks' largest projects in Foley transformed the children's section of the newly constructed Foley Community Library into an immersive storybook environment.
Approximately 1,500 square feet of murals surround young readers with whimsical animals, nature, local references, and details designed for children to discover. Banks also created a sculptural reading tree for the space, combining mural painting with techniques influenced by his previous experience building large-scale Mardi Gras floats in New Orleans.
The project was designed around literacy, imagination, exploration, and discovery, turning the children's library into an environment where artwork becomes part of the experience of reading.

Banks Compton Art Studio
One of Banks' most personal Foley murals covers the exterior of his own working art studio.
Painted in 2022, the mural is inspired by the wetlands of Alabama's Mobile-Tensaw Delta and features two monumental great blue herons surrounded by American lotus flowers at sunset.
Located along an alley in Foley, the project transformed the exterior of Banks' studio into a public-facing piece of artwork. Lighting allows the mural to remain visible at night, extending its presence beyond daylight hours.
The mural also played an important role in Banks' Foley portfolio: after seeing the artwork, representatives connected with OWA became interested in his work, eventually leading to the Downtown OWA commission.
Downtown OWA
At Downtown OWA, Banks created a colorful wraparound mural designed specifically for children, families, and visitors to Foley.
The mural transforms familiar wildlife into adventurous characters. Raccoons and a manatee take to the sky in hot-air balloons, an alligator and turtle travel by kayak, and a deer and great blue heron ride bicycles through the landscape.
A butterfly positioned around the corner of the mural creates an interactive photo opportunity where visitors can stand between its wings.
The mural later became part of a nighttime attraction when animated projections were layered over the existing artwork during OWA's 2025 holiday tree-lighting celebration. Moving imagery, including Santa's sleigh, traveled across the painted composition without altering the permanent mural underneath.

About Foley Mural Artist Banks Compton
Banks Compton is an Alabama-born mural artist and fine art painter based in Foley, Alabama.
A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Banks creates large-scale murals centered around storytelling, nature, local culture, and the identity of the places where they are painted.
Before establishing his independent mural practice, Banks gained experience creating large-scale sculptural artwork for Mardi Gras floats in New Orleans and working on custom event environments in New York City.
Today, his murals can be found across Alabama and throughout the United States.
His process begins by listening to the client and learning about the location before developing a custom design. The goal is not simply to fill a wall, but to create artwork that feels like it belongs to the people and place it represents.
