Alabama mural artist Banks Compton painted this large exterior mural on his private art studio in Foley, Alabama, in 2022.
Inspired by the wetlands of Alabama's Mobile-Tensaw Delta, the mural features two monumental great blue herons surrounded by blooming American lotus flowers at sunset.
Located along the alley behind Banks' studio in downtown Foley, the mural transformed an otherwise ordinary exterior wall into a colorful piece of public-facing artwork and has become one of Banks' most recognizable murals in his hometown.
It is also the place where many of his other murals begin.
Inside the studio, Banks develops designs, prepares materials, creates paintings, and plans mural projects that eventually travel to walls throughout Alabama and beyond.

Turning an Alley Into an Art Space
The location was also an important part of the project.
Banks painted the mural shortly after moving to Foley in 2022, transforming the exterior of his own garage and art studio into a large-scale example of his work.
The mural faces an alley in downtown Foley, turning a utilitarian space into a colorful visual destination.
Exterior lighting was later added so the artwork could remain visible after sunset, giving the alley a different character at night.
The project demonstrates one of the simplest ways murals can contribute to a downtown environment: taking a wall that people might otherwise pass without noticing and giving them a reason to look.
Inspired by the Mobile-Tensaw Delta
The mural draws inspiration from one of Alabama's most distinctive natural environments: the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta.
Rather than illustrating the landscape literally, Banks developed a stylized interpretation of a wetland at sunset.
Two enormous great blue herons frame the composition from opposite sides of the wall. Between them, American lotus flowers rise from dark blue water, surrounded by oversized green leaves, grasses, and wetland vegetation.
Behind the landscape, the setting sun creates a large circular field of warm color that anchors the center of the composition.
The result combines recognizable Alabama wildlife with the expressive color, pattern, and movement that have become recurring elements throughout Banks' mural work.
Great Blue Herons & American Lotus
The two great blue herons create a symmetrical conversation across the wall.
Both birds lean toward the water as if searching for their next meal, directing the viewer's eye toward the field of lotus flowers between them.
The American lotus plants provide the mural's brightest focal points. Their pale yellow flowers contrast against oversized green leaves and deep blue water, while the surrounding vegetation creates a dense wetland environment across the bottom of the building.
Banks used energetic lines and visible marks throughout the birds, plants, water, and sky rather than attempting to make the scene completely photorealistic.
That approach allows the mural to sit somewhere between observation and imagination: recognizable as an Alabama wetland while still clearly functioning as a painting.
The Studio Behind the Murals
The building serves as Banks' working art studio.
It is where mural concepts are developed, renderings are created, paintings are produced, and materials are prepared before projects begin throughout Alabama and beyond.
That makes the mural particularly personal.
Rather than being artwork created for a client, Banks had complete freedom to cover his own studio with subjects he naturally enjoys painting: wildlife, plants, water, movement, and the landscapes of Alabama.
The finished wall became both a piece of artwork and an introduction to the type of work being created inside.
A Mural That Led to Another Foley Project
The studio mural also played an unexpected role in the growth of Banks' work in Foley.
After seeing the mural, representatives connected with OWA became interested in Banks' work, eventually leading to his mural commission at Downtown OWA.
That later project continued several themes visible here—colorful wildlife, nature, movement, and approachable storytelling—but expanded them into a family-oriented mural featuring animal characters participating in hot-air ballooning, kayaking, cycling, and other adventures.

This connection makes the studio mural an important part of Banks' history as a mural artist in Foley: a personal project painted on his own building ultimately helped create another major public-facing mural in his hometown.
Murals Inspired by Alabama's Natural Environment
Nature has remained a recurring subject throughout Banks' mural work.
Alabama provides an especially rich source of imagery, from Gulf Coast wetlands and native wildlife to rivers, forests, flowers, and agricultural landscapes.
Rather than using those subjects simply as decoration, Banks often combines them with the particular story of a location.
At his Foley studio, there was no client brief to follow. The mural became an opportunity to paint the Alabama landscape and wildlife that personally interested him.
