Alabama mural artist Banks Compton created this colorful wildlife mural for a private hunting camp outside Demopolis, Alabama.
The artwork transformed a utilitarian shipping container used for storage into a large-scale piece of art inspired by the wildlife, landscape, and hunting traditions of rural West Alabama.
A white-tailed buck stands prominently across the end of the container while Zeus, the owner's Jack Russell terrier and hunting companion, appears nearby. The landscape continues around the corner of the structure, allowing the mural to wrap from one surface onto the next.

Turning an Unsightly Structure Into a Feature
Before the mural, the converted shipping container primarily served a practical purpose: storage.
While useful, the large industrial structure stood out within the otherwise natural setting of the hunting property.
Rather than removing or attempting to conceal it, Banks used the container itself as the canvas.
The mural transforms the structure from something utilitarian into a visual feature of the property, demonstrating how artwork can be used to rethink buildings and objects that aren't traditionally considered artistic surfaces
Inspired by Hunting & the Alabama Outdoors
The mural was designed specifically for its setting at a private hunting camp.
A large white-tailed buck serves as the primary subject, surrounded by a stylized landscape of rolling terrain, trees, distant hills, and an expressive sky.
Banks approached the landscape through exaggerated color and energetic brushwork rather than strict realism. Repeated lines and marks move through the sky, vegetation, deer, and ground, giving the entire composition a sense of movement.
The result celebrates the wildlife and outdoor experiences associated with the property while maintaining the expressive style found throughout Banks' work.
Zeus: A Personal Detail in the Landscape
One of the smallest characters in the mural gives the project its most personal detail.
Alongside the much larger deer is Zeus, the owner's small Jack Russell terrier.
Including Zeus transforms the scene from a generalized image of Alabama wildlife into something specific to the people who use the hunting camp.
The enormous deer commands attention from a distance, while the much smaller dog becomes a detail viewers discover as they approach the artwork.
That contrast in scale also gives the scene a playful quality, with Zeus appearing ready to explore the landscape alongside the deer.
A Mural That Wraps Around the Architecture
The design doesn't stop at the edge of the shipping container.
The landscape continues around the corner, allowing the mural to interact with the three-dimensional shape of the structure.
This creates a different experience from a mural painted on a single flat wall. As viewers move around the container, additional portions of the landscape are revealed.
Designing around corners, seams, corrugated surfaces, doors, and other architectural features requires considering the structure as a whole rather than treating it as a flat rectangular canvas.
Murals for Unconventional Surfaces
Some of Banks' most distinctive projects have been painted on surfaces that were never originally intended to display artwork.
Shipping containers, grain silos, corrugated-metal structures, tanks, garages, and other functional buildings can all become canvases for large-scale artwork.
These projects offer an opportunity to turn structures that might otherwise be visually overlooked—or even considered unattractive—into recognizable features of a property.
For this Demopolis hunting camp, a storage container became a colorful celebration of the landscape, wildlife, and experiences surrounding it.
