St. John Courtyard Mural | Fairhope, Alabama
Alabama mural artist Banks Compton created this residential courtyard mural in Fairhope, Alabama, as a personal tribute to his grandparents and childhood family trips to St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The mural is installed at his grandmother's home, where Banks' aunt, an architect, designed the backyard courtyard and intentionally incorporated a large mural panel into the fence for him to paint.
The finished artwork transforms that architectural feature into a colorful underwater scene filled with memories of a place that has been meaningful to Banks and his family for years.

A Thank You to Family
The project is particularly meaningful to Banks because his grandparents made many of the childhood trips that inspired the mural possible.
Those experiences introduced him to new landscapes, wildlife, and environments at a young age—subjects that would later become recurring influences throughout his artwork.
Painting the St. John scene at his grandmother's home became a way to preserve those memories while also creating a permanent thank-you to his grandparents.

Bringing St. John to Fairhope
The mural depicts a vibrant Caribbean seascape above and below the water.
A sea turtle swims through the center of the composition while colorful tropical fish move between corals and other marine life. Above the waterline, a sailboat and rocky shoreline reference days spent exploring St. John and the surrounding islands.
Banks filled the mural with species and imagery associated with the family's experiences there, creating a scene that feels less like a generic tropical landscape and more like a collection of memories.
Designed Into the Architecture
Unlike a mural added to an existing blank wall, this artwork was considered while the courtyard itself was being designed.
Banks' aunt incorporated the large framed panel directly into the backyard fence, creating a dedicated architectural space for artwork.
The result allows the mural to function almost like an enormous outdoor painting. From the courtyard, the panel creates the illusion of looking through the fence and into another landscape.
