Alabama mural artist Banks Compton created this colorful garden mural for the Rotary Youth Club serving the Fairhope and Point Clear community.
Painted across the garden shed used by the club's after-school garden program, the mural celebrates the plants, insects, and pollinators that students encounter while learning about gardening and the natural environment.
More importantly, the children helped create the finished artwork themselves.

Connecting Art With the Garden
The mural's subject matter connects directly to what happens around it.
Students use the surrounding garden beds to learn about gardening, plants, insects, pollinators, and the natural environment. Butterflies and flowers therefore aren't simply decorative elements; they extend the lessons of the garden onto the building itself.
The project demonstrates how collaborative murals can help children learn about both art and nature while giving them genuine ownership of a permanent piece of their community.
A Butterfly That Opens
Banks designed the mural around the existing architecture of the garden shed.
A monumental tiger swallowtail butterfly spans the center doors. Because its wings extend across both doors, the butterfly physically opens when students enter the shed to retrieve gardening tools and supplies.
Monarch butterflies, large yellow flowers, leaves, and colorful patterns continue across the surrounding walls, transforming the functional storage building into a centerpiece for the garden.
Giving Students Their Own Space on the Wall
Students participated directly in painting areas of the mural, but Banks wanted their involvement to extend beyond simply filling in parts of his design.
Throughout the background, the children created their own small pictograms and illustrations of butterflies, dragonflies, insects, flowers, and other imagery.
Banks preserved those drawings in the finished mural rather than painting over or refining them.
The result allows the students' individual marks to remain permanently alongside Banks' artwork—a record of the children who participated in the project.
