Northport Rabbit Mural | Northport, Alabama
Alabama mural artist Banks Compton created this colorful exterior mural for a Blue Moon Properties residential property just outside historic downtown Northport, Alabama.
Located near Kentuck Art Center and Northport's walkable downtown district, the mural was designed to contribute to an area already known for art, local shops, restaurants, and creative character.
Banks developed a whimsical nighttime landscape featuring three rabbits racing beneath a glowing moon. Alabama passion flowers explode like fireworks from either side of the composition, while the energetic patterns and handmade quality of the imagery draw inspiration from Northport's folk-art traditions.

Inspired by Blue Moon Properties
The property's connection to Blue Moon Properties helped inspire the nighttime setting of the mural.
Rather than incorporating the company's branding literally, Banks used the name as a creative starting point, developing a whimsical nighttime landscape beneath a glowing moon. Three rabbits leap across the wall while a winding red ribbon creates movement through the composition.
Oversized passion flowers burst from either side of the mural almost like fireworks, surrounded by vines, foliage, patterns, and energetic marks.
The result subtly connects the artwork to Blue Moon Properties while allowing the mural to stand on its own as a piece of public-facing art inspired by the creative character of Northport.
Inspired by Northport's Creative Character
Historic downtown Northport has a distinct visual identity shaped by art, locally owned businesses, historic architecture, and the influence of the nearby Kentuck Art Center.
That environment became an important source of inspiration for the mural.
Rather than creating something overly polished or architectural, Banks leaned into a more playful folk-art aesthetic. Three rabbits leap across a deep blue nighttime landscape surrounded by energetic lines, patterns, foliage, and oversized passion flowers.
The result feels intentionally imaginative and slightly unexpected—an artwork meant to complement the creative personality visitors encounter while exploring Northport.
Rabbits Racing Through the Night
Three oversized rabbits form the center of the composition, appearing to race across the wall beneath a glowing moon.
A continuous red ribbon winds around the rabbits, creating movement across the long brick surface and visually connecting the individual figures.
On either side, oversized passion flowers burst into the composition almost like fireworks. Their radiating petals, vines, and surrounding marks push the energy of the central scene outward toward the edges of the building.
The mural combines recognizable plants and animals with exaggerated movement, pattern, and color to create a contemporary interpretation of Southern folk-art imagery.
Adding Art to an Everyday Space
One of the goals of the project was to bring the artistic atmosphere of downtown Northport beyond the immediate commercial district.
The mural is painted on the exterior of a small multi-unit rental property—a type of building that might otherwise never become a destination for public-facing artwork.
Transforming that wall demonstrates how murals can bring character to everyday architecture, including apartments and rental properties.
For residents, neighbors, and people exploring the area, the artwork creates another unexpected moment of color and creativity just outside downtown.
Connecting to Northport's Art Community
With Kentuck Art Center nearby and public artwork throughout the downtown area, Northport has developed a strong connection between art and its sense of place.
This mural was designed to contribute to that larger environment.
Instead of functioning as an isolated piece, the rabbits, native-inspired floral imagery, handmade quality, and energetic composition were chosen to feel at home within a community where visitors can walk between shops, restaurants, galleries, and works of art.
The project has also been featured by Visit Tuscaloosa, helping introduce the mural to visitors exploring art and attractions throughout the Tuscaloosa and Northport area.
