Students Helping Create the Mural
Students were invited to participate in painting portions of Banks' design during the project.
Their involvement introduced them to the process of creating artwork at architectural scale while allowing them to contribute directly to a permanent improvement at their school.
Banks completed and refined the final composition so the finished mural remained cohesive while preserving the experience of students having helped bring it to life.
The Life Cycle of a Monarch Butterfly
The mural follows the transformation of the monarch across the wall.
Caterpillars crawl across milkweed leaves while a chrysalis hangs among the plants. Fully developed monarch butterflies then appear throughout the composition, including a large butterfly that serves as the mural's primary focal point.
Banks used oversized imagery to make the different stages of the butterfly's life cycle easy to recognize while creating a bright, energetic environment for the school's outdoor space.
Connecting the Mural to the Garden
The subject was chosen specifically for its relationship to the landscape surrounding it.
The School of Liberal Arts grows milkweed as part of its pollinator garden, giving students the opportunity to encounter the same plants and insects represented at a much larger scale on the wall.
This connection allows the mural to function as more than decoration. The artwork extends the garden onto the architecture and reinforces lessons about butterflies, plants, pollinators, and the natural environment.
