Lotus Flower Mural | Providence, Rhode Island

Transforming a Retaining Wall with Nature

Banks Compton created this colorful lotus flower mural in Providence, Rhode Island, transforming a concrete retaining wall surrounding the parking area of an apartment complex.

The design features oversized white lotus blossoms, lily pads, seed pods, water, and other botanical forms flowing across the changing angles of the wall. Bright reds, blues, and greens turn the otherwise utilitarian structure into a vibrant garden-inspired feature for residents and visitors.

Nature Inspired Public Art

The mural uses the long retaining wall as a continuous canvas, allowing the lotus imagery to wrap around corners and follow the architecture of the property.

Nature remains a recurring influence throughout Banks' mural practice, with plants, wildlife, and landscapes frequently used to bring color and movement into everyday spaces.
