The Rabbit Hole Murals | Tuscaloosa, Alabama
Alabama mural artist Banks Compton transformed the interior and exterior of The Rabbit Hole, a popular bar on University Boulevard in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, with a series of playful rabbit-themed murals.
Located on the Strip near the University of Alabama, The Rabbit Hole welcomes a large college and game-day crowd. The murals were designed to give the bar a distinctive visual identity while creating memorable photo opportunities that guests could share on social media.
What began as a dark, primarily black interior became an immersive extension of The Rabbit Hole brand—complete with giant bartending rabbits, hidden jokes, custom patterns, cocktails, and plenty of personality.

Creating a Brighter, More Immersive Interior
The Rabbit Hole's interior is predominantly painted black, creating a distinctive atmosphere but also presenting an opportunity for artwork to dramatically change the space.
Banks used the murals to introduce large areas of imagery, movement, and visual interest while working with the existing dark environment.
Instead of competing with the character of the bar, the murals build on it. The oversized rabbits and playful imagery create the feeling that guests have stepped into the world suggested by the business's name.
The result is an interior that feels more recognizable, memorable, and specific to The Rabbit Hole.
Meet the Bartending Rabbits
The interior mural is centered around oversized rabbits working behind the bar, turning The Rabbit Hole's name into a cast of characters.
Each bartender has a name tag with a small Easter egg for visitors to discover. The male rabbits are Roger and Bugs, references to two of pop culture's most recognizable rabbits.
The female rabbit has developed two possible identities—Lola or Jessica, depending on which famous rabbit character you prefer.
The details continue into what they're serving. The rabbits interact with carrot juice alongside drinks inspired by The Rabbit Hole's popular frozen slushies and bushwhackers, tying the imaginary rabbit bar directly back to the real one.
These small details give customers something new to notice as they spend time in the space and help make the mural feel like part of the personality of the bar rather than simply decoration.
Extending the Experience Outside
The mural project continued beyond the interior.
Banks also created artwork around the rear entrance to welcome guests approaching the building from outside and make the Rabbit Hole identity visible before customers ever enter the bar.
One element features a custom “bunny-tooth” pattern—a playful variation on Alabama's familiar houndstooth pattern in which rabbit silhouettes are incorporated into the repeating design.
Additional exterior artwork incorporates The Rabbit Hole logo and a large rabbit head designed as a photo opportunity for customers.
Together, the exterior murals turn what could have simply been a secondary entrance into another branded part of the customer experience.
Turning Murals Into Social Media Moments
One of the most successful aspects of The Rabbit Hole murals has been how naturally customers interact with them.
The large-scale characters, recognizable rabbit theme, exterior artwork, and dedicated photo opportunities give customers multiple places to take photographs and videos while visiting the bar.
That interaction has helped the artwork reach an audience far beyond the physical building. The Rabbit Hole regularly attracts University of Alabama students and game-day visitors, and photographs of the murals have circulated through the bar's social media and its customers' own posts.
For a business, that creates a second function for the artwork: the mural becomes both part of the physical environment and a recognizable backdrop for the brand online.
Murals as Business Branding
The Rabbit Hole demonstrates how custom murals can become an extension of a business's brand.
Rather than placing unrelated artwork inside the bar, Banks developed an entire visual world around the Rabbit Hole name, its drinks, its customers, and its location in Tuscaloosa.
The bartending rabbits establish the characters. The bunny-tooth pattern creates a custom graphic element. The exterior murals identify the building. The rabbit photo spot encourages interaction. Together, the individual murals create a consistent visual identity across the property.
For restaurants, bars, hotels, and other hospitality businesses, this kind of site-specific artwork can help turn an ordinary interior or exterior wall into something customers associate specifically with that business.
A Tuscaloosa Mural Built for Game Days
The Rabbit Hole sits on University Boulevard in Tuscaloosa's Strip area, putting the murals in front of a steady audience of students, visitors, and Alabama football fans. Local tourism coverage includes The Rabbit Hole among places to eat and drink near the University of Alabama campus.
Football weekends bring an especially active audience to the Strip, giving the murals repeated exposure to visitors coming into Tuscaloosa throughout the season.
That makes this project an example of how public-facing commercial artwork can continue generating value long after the painting itself is finished.
