Tambo's Surf Shack Mural | Gulf Shores, Alabama
Artist Banks Compton created this series of interior murals for Tambos Surf & Skate Shop in Gulf Shores, Alabama, transforming the back of the local surf and skate shop with colorful imagery inspired by waves, skateboarding, coffee, and Gulf Coast culture.
The murals originally surrounded Surf Skate Coffee, a coffee shop that operated inside Tambo's, while also becoming part of the larger visual identity of the surf and skate shop.
With skateboards displayed above the murals and an indoor skate bowl nearby, the artwork was designed to feel integrated into the unusual environment Tambo's had created—a combination of retail shop, skate space, coffee shop, and gathering place for the local surf community. Tourism coverage described Surf Skate Coffee as being located inside Tambo's, just beyond the skate ramp.

Bringing the Gulf Coast Indoors
The murals use oversized waves, bright color, heavy outlines, sunlight, surf imagery, and skate culture to bring the energy of the Alabama coast inside the building.
Rather than treating each wall as an isolated painting, Banks used the architecture of the shop to allow the imagery to wrap around corners and surround the coffee and skate areas.
The collection of used skateboard decks displayed above the murals further integrates the artwork with the space, making the walls feel like an extension of the culture already developing inside Tambo's.
Creating an Environment Around Surf & Skate Culture
Tambo's Surf Shack was founded by Gulf Shores native Mike “Tambo” Tamburello, who grew up surfing on the Alabama Gulf Coast before spending years in California and competing in surfing events around the country. He returned to Gulf Shores in 2016 and began building Tambo's as a way to help strengthen the local surf community.
The shop eventually grew into a gathering place centered around surfing and skateboarding, complete with an indoor skate bowl, equipment and apparel, lessons, and youth surf and skate camps. The Gulf Shores & Orange Beach tourism organization describes Tambo's as a local surf and skate shop and skate park in Pelican Place.
Surf Skate Coffee
At the back of Tambo's was Surf Skate Coffee, a coffee shop built directly into the surf-and-skate environment.
The unusual concept allowed visitors to grab coffee while browsing surf gear or watching skaters use the indoor bowl. Gulf Shores tourism coverage highlighted the combination of surf gear, skateboard decks, coffee, and indoor skatingas part of the experience.
Banks painted the surrounding walls with imagery that brought those different parts of the space together. One mural features a massive curling wave wrapping around a glowing sunset, while another combines a breaking wave with a skateboarder, coffee imagery, and the words “Surf Skate Coffee.”
Although the coffee operation later closed, the murals remain connected to the larger surf-and-skate identity of Tambo's.
A Gathering Place for Gulf Shores Surf Culture
Tambo's has continued to serve as a gathering place for younger surfers and skaters on the Alabama Gulf Coast. Recent coverage describes the shop as particularly focused on rebuilding local surf culture and creating a place where young people can learn, skate, surf, and spend time together.
That community aspect made the project especially well suited to Banks' approach to commercial murals: creating artwork that reflects not only what a business sells, but also the people, culture, and experience surrounding the business.
