Alabama mural artist Banks Compton created this large-scale exterior mural for Colodge in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Designed as a celebration of the University of Alabama and the city surrounding it, the mural has become a popular backdrop for graduation photos, Alabama football game-day pictures, and visitors documenting their time in Tuscaloosa.

Painted almost entirely in Alabama crimson, white, and grayscale, the mural combines recognizable university landmarks, traditions, and imagery into one continuous composition centered around the word “Tuscaloosa.”

Creating a Tuscaloosa Photo Spot

The mural was designed not only as artwork for the property but as a place where people could interact with it.

Its scale, exterior location, bold Alabama colors, and recognizable imagery have made the wall a popular Tuscaloosa photo spot—particularly during football season and graduation.

Students and families use the mural as a backdrop for graduation photographs, while Alabama fans stop for photos on game days. The large central “Tuscaloosa” composition provides a natural focal point for visitors who want an image that immediately identifies where they are.

That interaction gives the mural a life beyond the wall itself. Every graduation portrait, game-day photograph, and social media post allows the artwork to become part of someone's memory of Tuscaloosa.

Celebrating Tuscaloosa and Alabama Football

The mural brings together imagery immediately associated with the University of Alabama and the experience of being in Tuscaloosa.

An elephant anchors one side of the composition while Bryant-Denny Stadium rises behind an Alabama football player near the center. Denny Chimes, the Million Dollar Band, cheerleaders, books, a football, and other university references continue across the wall.

Rather than separating these elements into individual scenes, Banks connected them through sweeping decorative forms and a limited crimson-and-white palette, creating a single visual celebration of Alabama.

Murals That Create a Sense of Place

For hospitality properties, apartments, restaurants, and businesses, a mural can become more than decoration.

Site-specific artwork can give visitors a reason to stop, take a photograph, share their experience, and associate a location with a particular place.

For Colodge, the goal was to create something that could only exist in Tuscaloosa.

The mural draws from the visual identity and traditions surrounding the University of Alabama while creating a distinctive landmark for the property itself.

Designed Around the Existing Architecture

The exterior wall presented its own set of design challenges, including numerous existing windows and architectural interruptions.

Instead of fighting those features, Banks developed the composition around them. Major elements occupy the brick spaces between windows while the crimson background visually connects the entire wall.

The result allows the architecture and artwork to function together rather than making the mural feel as though it was simply placed over the building.
