Walmart Mural Designs | Alabama & Louisiana
Artist Banks Compton has created site-specific mural designs for Walmart locations across six states: Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania.
Each project was developed around the community surrounding its individual store, incorporating local landmarks, culture, history, and regional imagery into an original design.
Unlike Banks' hand-painted mural commissions, the Walmart projects were created as digital illustrations designed for architectural-scale reproduction. The completed artwork was printed on large-format vinyl and installed at each Walmart location.
While Banks has completed Walmart mural projects across six states, this page highlights three examples from Algiers/New Orleans, Louisiana; Mobile, Alabama; and Dothan, Alabama, with the New Orleans project serving as a particularly strong example of the series.

Algiers / New Orleans, Louisiana
Of Banks' Walmart projects, the Algiers mural became a particularly successful example of using locally inspired imagery to give a national retail environment a stronger connection to its surrounding community.
The design celebrates the unmistakable character of New Orleans and South Louisiana, bringing together recognizable elements of the area's architecture, traditions, music, celebrations, and visual culture.
Banks approached the composition with a colorful graffiti-inspired aesthetic, layering individual references into an energetic design that feels appropriate to the character and creative culture of New Orleans.
The result transforms an otherwise standardized retail environment into something specifically connected to the community where the store is located.
Dothan, Alabama
A third Walmart project was created for Dothan in southeast Alabama.
The design continued the same site-specific approach, using imagery selected to connect the store with the culture and identity of its surrounding community.
Together, the three projects demonstrate how a consistent commercial art program can still be customized to tell a different story at every location.
Mobile, Alabama
Banks also developed a Walmart mural design for Mobile, Alabama, incorporating imagery associated with the city and Alabama Gulf Coast.
The artwork celebrates local culture and recognizable elements of Mobile, creating a visual introduction to the community for customers entering the store.
Like the New Orleans project, the final artwork was digitally illustrated before being enlarged and reproduced as a large-scale vinyl installation.
From Digital Illustration to Architectural Scale
These projects required a different process from Banks' traditional painted murals.
Rather than painting directly onto the finished wall, Banks created the artwork digitally and prepared it to function at architectural scale. The final illustrations were then printed onto vinyl and installed at the Walmart locations.
This approach allowed detailed illustrations to be translated into very large environmental graphics while maintaining the colors and visual character of the original designs.
The projects also demonstrate Banks' ability to work beyond traditional paint and adapt his illustration style to commercial graphics, environmental design, and large-format installations.
Creating Local Identity for National Brands
One of the challenges of creating artwork for a national company is finding ways to make an individual location feel connected to the place where it operates.
For these Walmart projects, local landmarks and cultural references became the foundation for each design.
Although all three projects were created for the same retailer and produced using the same digital-to-vinyl process, the imagery changed from city to city.
The result was artwork created specifically for New Orleans, Mobile, and Dothan, rather than a single design repeated across multiple stores.
